Kathleen is the regular music reviewer for the Journal of Singing, "the official journal of National Association of Teachers of Singing, providing current information regarding the teaching of singing as well as results of recent research in the field. A refereed journal, it serves as an historical record and is a venue for teachers of singing and other scholars to share the results of their work in areas such as history, diction, voice science, medicine, and especially voice pedagogy. Journal of Singing is published five times annually (Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec, Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June).”

    • Abstract: “Two new editions by Breitkopf and Härtel introduce groundbreaking anthologies of French and Chinese art song. The first is an anthology of songs by 19th century woman composer Pauline Viardot,  Viardot-Garcia: Ausgewählte Lieder für Singstimme und Klavier, Band I (Selected Songs for Voice and Piano, Volume I), and the second is Three Wishes from a Rose: 16 Ausgewählte chinesische Kunstlieder. The third new publication is the work of editors, Dennis Tobienski, Eric Saroian, and Connor Johnson, for New Music Shelf, the Anthology of New Music: Trans and Nonbinary Voices, Volume I.”

    • Abstract: “This review introduces two song cycles by American composers, Jeff Beal and Stanley Grill. Beal’s setting of poetry by his great-grandmother is a beautiful showcase for high soprano, available for orchestra, string quartet or piano and voice, and Grill’s is a highly effective setting of poetry by Federico Garcia Lorca. Also reviewed is an anthology of Czech opera arias, prepared by editor Kyle Gougler.”

    • Abstract: “The work of three women composers are featured in this review. Six French songs by Pauline Garcia-Viardot; a collection of solos by historical women composers, created by ClarNan Editions; and settings of Shakespeare texts, solos and duets, by unknown 20th century composer Lola Williams. American composer Alan Louis Smith’s Surfing the Thin Places is another in a remarkable oeuvre of English language settings by an outstanding 21st century American composer.”
